Local Ministries - Volunteer Opportunities
Butler House
This after-school program runs out of "Butler House" in the Ranchwood Condos. Students build relationships and provide positive role models for elementary and junior high kids as they tutor them and play games.
After School Programs
Students team up with other FPU students in the after school program at the Chestnut or the Ranchwood apartments, where kids are provided with tutoring, games and computer training (3:00p.m. - 5:00p.m., 2-4 hours per week, limited to 10 volunteers).
InReach
Joining with Catholic Charities, this is a ministry to the hungry and homeless in downtown Fresno. Students spend time and interact with these men, women and children as they serve them food and spend time listening to their needs (limited to 15 volunteers).
Youth Alternative
This ministry is a mentoring program where students spend one-on-one time with a juvenile who is in a substance abuse rehabilitation program. As a relationship is formed, students are able to model respect, values and morals and share their faith (2-4 hours per week).
Terronez Middle School
Students are connected to middle school students who are especially in need of mentors who can help them with homework assignments, reading and math skills, etc. (2 hours per week, limited to 15 volunteers).
Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP)
Learn and serve in mediation as you take one to two classes during the semester. You will have the opportunity to work with both the offender and the victims of crimes and work towards restitution (1½ day training).
Senior Citizens at Twilight Haven
Students who are interested in "adopting" a senior citizen around our FPU community are encouraged to apply. This population is in need of conversation, attention and friendship; you might be surprised how much they have to share (limited to 10 volunteers).
Read Fresno
Students get to work with an elementary student at either Burroughs Elementary or Greenber Elementary anytime between 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The school has a waiting list of children needing mentors to help them learn to read (minimum of 1 hour per week).
Fresno Seniors
Spending time with senior citizens specifically showing them how to use computers, helps build relationships with the elderly in our own neighborhood. This ministry also hosts a Christmas event each year.
