Peace & Justice Issues

FPU's commitment to peacemaking in the world and our belief in the practice of reconciliation and love in settings of violence, oppression and injustice creates many opportunities for students. These activities inform, educate and equip students to become peacemakers in the world.

Brewed Awakenings
Once a month a film highlighting peace and justice issues in a foreign country is shown on campus. Issues such as debt, economics, human rights, natural resources, political structure and the environment are viewed through academic lenses. Students are challenged to consider a personal response. College Hour credit is sometimes offered.

Night of Persecution
As a means to open students' eyes to the reality of Christian persecution throughout the world, this dramatic event is held to raise awareness and support. Students are sent to find prayer meetings hidden on campus, while volunteers acting as security personnel raid the meetings. Students are "forced" to deny their faith or face "imprisonment and interrogation." This powerful evening also includes corporate worship and prayer and a special speaker.

Peace and Justice Issues Spring Break Trip
Traveling south to the border, visiting communities on both sides, students will consider peace and justice issues on such difficult topics as humanitarianism, economics, poverty, the environment and AIDS awareness.

VORP (Victim-Offender Reconciliation Program)
VORP is a restorative justice approach to conflict bringing victims and offenders together in a safe mediation. Offenders are permitted to take responsibility for their actions through a mediated restitution agreement, and victims have an opportunity to be heard. Students may become trained mediators and receive course credit. VORP is administered by the FPU's Center for Peacemaking and Conflict Studies.
